Centre gives 'innovative' advice

A Barnsley technology centre is to give advice to small and medium-sized companies across Yorkshire that wish to introduce new innovations.
AIDC European Centre of Excellence, which recently secured accreditation from Business Link, has developed an international reputation as a leader in data capture and automatic identification.
The accreditation means it will be able to provide advice under the Innovation Voucher Scheme, where vouchers are worth up to £3,000 and can be used by SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) to fund research.
The centre provides advice to firms across the county on the best way of using technologies such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), bar and 2D-coding, smartcards and biometrics.
The centre recently moved from Halifax to Barnsley's Digital Media Centre to be part of the Digital Region initiative which will make South Yorkshire the first area in the UK to have comprehensive Superfast Broadband services.
Marketing director Peter Collins said: "The majority of organisations accredited with the Innovation Vouchers scheme are universities with large research departments.
"Compared to them, AIDC is a small technical consultancy, but we are delighted that Business Link recognises the value we can bring to clients by being independent, not-for-profit experts in our area of specialism."
