Christmas success 'vital' for York

York retailers need a happy Christmas, the head of a local business association has said, as the economic slowdown lays even more importance on the holiday period.
North Yorkshire and York Chamber of Commerce representative Susie Cawood added that Christmas is only 71 shopping days away, and will be particularly important for companies which do not benefit from tourism revenue.
"A lot of retailers take most of their revenue over the Christmas period, but it's particularly important this year - for some more than others. Some may have had a good summer because of the good tourist season that we've had," Ms Cawood told the York Press.
She added that the area had done well to ride out the problems, and were "better placed to have a good Christmas season".
"People will be looking more carefully where they visit. They want the whole experience. They have not been going abroad as much this year, so we've had a good summer for tourism and hopefully that will carry on into autumn and winter," she said.
