York potato supplier Cockerills is looking to the future after it announced a £3 million investment initiative.
The company provides potatoes from Yorkshire growers to discount retailers and it plans to invest in warehouse expansion and new machinery with the cash injection. An additional £1 million grant, which has been approved by regional development agency Yorkshire Forward, will be added to the £2 million already raised.
Turnover through the Cockerills' packhouse is expected to increase by 80% with an 85% rise in the potato tonnage supplied by nearby growers. The company's 86 strong workforce will also be boosted by 33 new jobs as part of the investment.
The Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) will provide the extra £1 million investment - the first million-pound approval for funding of this type by Yorkshire Forward.
Martin Cockerill, managing director at Cockerills, said: "We can now move forwards developing and expanding the company through improving the efficiency and doubling the capacity of our packhouse operation."
"Without the RDPE funding we wouldn't have been able to fulfil our growth ambition and we would have had to scale down our plans."
