EA strengthens York's flood defences
मंगलवार, 23 जून 2009
The Environment Agency (EA) is investing in improved flood defences in York in a bid to protect the city from downpours.
With an estimated 18,000 properties believed to be at risk, the organisation hopes its efforts will help protect both the city's people and its properties.
Workers at the site on Middlethorpe Ings have been trying to restore the defences to their original height and shape, which were destroyed during floods of recent years.
Staff from the EA are expected to walk along the route later in the summer to see how the defences are bearing up.
In its summer forecast for 2009, the Met Office predicted that the country would see less rain and more sunshine, with temperatures likely to exceed 30 degrees C.
Rainfall would be near or below average over the coming months, it suggested, although heavy downpours could not be ruled out completely.
