Confectionary giant Nestle is undertaking a drive to recruit six apprentices from York, in a boost for training and development in Yorkshire and the Humber.
Apprentices with the chocolate firm will follow a variety of disciplines, from engineering to administration.
Those appointed to the roles will combine college studying with on the job training with qualified professionals.
Engineering apprenticeships can take four years to complete and involve a level three engineering NVQ which could lead to more advanced qualifications.
A current apprentice, James Cuthbert, says the scheme enables trainees to "climb the ladder".
He commented: "Nestle sets you up so well for whatever you want to do.
"There are loads of courses here both internal and external - it's up to you to take advantage of them."
At the start of the year the government announced ambitious plans to boost apprenticeships.
A pledge was made to invest £140 million, creating an additional 35,000 trainees in 2009/10.
